Dr Alistair Newbould, of Humanimals Veterinary Hospital, has been voted “Vet of the Year” in the national Petplan Veterinary Awards 2018.
Petplan, which provides pet insurance , launched the veterinary awards in 2016. There are other professional awards, but this is the only one voted on by customers.
Dr Alistair Newbould was nominated initially then the nominations narrowed down to the top five nominees across New Zealand before being opened to the public for voting.
Alistair received a great number of votes, proving how valued he is in the Dunedin community. Nominations told of his great care and how important he was to owners whose pets had run into some trouble.
Being the humble and hardworking veterinarian, he didn't want a fuss, however, we think it is a very big deal that recognises his dedication to the pets of Dunedin for over 30 years. Come rain or shine, holidays or not, he is always willing to help.
“I have the best job in the world. I help clients care for their animals, the animals that mean so much to them and are such a big part of their lives. I get to do this because this amazing country and its people recognise that the way we treat our animals is the way we treat each other. Plus, my clients are committed to the care of their pets.
I can only do this work with the support of all the other people who work at Humanimals, all our suppliers and the expert referral veterinarians who help us out and most importantly a family who understands me. I knew when I started that this was not a job, nor a career but a way of life.”
He loves the variety the job offers, saying that everyday is different and always challenging. In 2016 Humanimals became only the third veterinary clinic to be awarded Best Practice Hospital Standards by the New Zealand Veterinary Association.
As part of his award he was able to select his favourite charity for a donation from Pet Plan and Royal Canin - he chose Land Search and Rescue.
